About the Project

IoT Compass is an interactive framework designed to support technology selection in the field of the Internet of Things (IoT). It assists users in identifying and evaluating suitable communication technologies based on application-specific requirements.

This framework was developed as part of a Master Thesis and combines user-defined weighting with domain-specific expertise to enhance the decision-making process. IoT Compass provides pre-configured scenarios such as Smart Home, Smart City, Industry 4.0, Smart Healthcare, Smart Agriculture and others.

In addition to these predefined domains, the framework also offers an Individual Application mode. This mode is designed for use cases that do not fully align with the standard categories. It provides greater flexibility in configuring evaluation criteria and contextual parameters, making it especially suitable for novel, hybrid or research-specific IoT projects.

The goal is to enable a structured, transparent and adaptable selection process for IoT communication technologies which is applicable in research, education, and industry.

For a detailed description of the underlying methodology, logic, and decision processes implemented in this framework, please refer to the Master Thesis titled “The Backbone of IoT: A Technical and Comparative Study of Internet of Things Communication Technologies” (Raul Cimpoeru, Hochschule Burgenland, 2025). The thesis provides an in-depth explanation of the conceptual development, evaluation models, and implementation details that form the foundation of IoT Compass.
